When I was in middle school, I wanted to be a News Anchor. In High School, I wanted to be an a big-time Interior Decorator like I saw on "Trading Spaces." Then I went to college, and I settled for being a teacher. I say "settled," NOT because teaching is a bad profession (it takes AMAZING people to dedicate themselves to the profession - they are underpaid and under-appreciated). I say "settled," because I didn't think I was capable of becoming a News Anchor or Interior Decorator. Deep down, I didn't believe I was "good enough." They were out of my league. I was just a small-town girl after all. I couldn't be anything THAT fabulous.
I also never thought I was "smart enough" to get a Master's Degree. I thought Master's Degrees were reserved for really "smart" or "special" people - not for small town girls like me. Glass ceilings - they controlled me until I was 25 years old.
If you want to shatter your glass ceiling, surround yourself with people who are doing the same. It wasn't until I met Ben, my now husband, that my glass ceilings began to crack little by little until they finally shattered.
When I was 21 I met Ben. He fascinated me with his career goals. When we met he was applying to veterinary schools. Only about 50% of people who apply to veterinary school get accepted. He applied when he was a junior in college, only to get denied. Did he give up? Nope. Instead, he worked harder his senior year to get better grades AND retook his GRE to get a better score. Then he reapplied. He got accepted to TWO different schools the second time around!
After being accepted to vet school, he decided he wanted to pursue equine surgery: one of the most competitive specialties in the field. In 2013, there were 16 reported equine surgical residencies available nationwide when Ben applied. Stiff competition to say the least, but he never let statistics stop him from going after his goals.
What marveled me about Ben was that he wasn't "naturally" good at school or tests. He didn't waltz into class to magically pass his test. HE WORKED HIS TAIL OFF. I watched him do this for four years throughout vet school. On multiple occasions he'd go to school to study at 5:00am and he'd return home at 2:30am.
What Ben's taught me, whether he knows it or not, is that glass ceilings don't have to exist if you work hard. Finally, after watching him for 4 years, I decided maybe I was smart enough to get a Master's Degree. Maybe this small-town girl could bust through her glass ceiling...and I did in 2012! This past year and a half, I've been working to burst through more glass ceilings. With Ben and my team of coaches as a support system, I'm more confident than I've ever been. While I still question my abilities sometimes, I know deep down anything is possible with a little faith, a whole lotta hard work, and a "never give up" attitude.
I started 2015 with a lot of glass ceilings above myself: my leadership, and my ability to build my little at-home fitness business. But come January 1st those glass ceilings will officially be shattered. What are your glass ceilings? What's stopping you from living the life of your dreams? If you want to shatter your glass ceilings, find other people who are working to do the same thing. You'll find that chasing dreams is contagious once you are around the right people!
