This might surprise you to hear – but gratitude is good for your health!
Seriously, it’s science! 🤓 Researchers have found that people who score higher on gratitude scales also report less aches, pains and illness. They also are more empathetic and less likely to lash out at others (I think something we all struggle with this busy and chaotic time of year! 🙈).
There’s plenty of other emotional and mental health benefits that have been found to correlate with practicing more gratitude. The research is there so you can Google it. 😆
Today, I want to focus more on HOW you can actually incorporate more gratitude and bring more good things into your life. Now is a great time to start! Embrace the month of thanks and feel the benefits of gratitude all month long, through the holidays and beyond!
Now let's get down to that "HOW" I was talking about...
📓 Start a daily gratitude journal.
This is a simple but surefire way to ensure you are actively being more grateful each day. Use a plain journal or notebook to write down 3-5 things each day that you are grateful for. Look back through it to see your blessings, especially when you are feeling down.
🙏🏼 Pray throughout your day.
Say thanks to the Lord (or your own deity) in your head or even out loud continually throughout your daily activities. Whether on your commute, in the shower or while cooking – there are plenty of opportunities to say "thank you" for the simple things like a working vehicle, hot running water, or food on the table.
📝 Send thank you notes.
The biggest focus of our gratitude should be towards people in our life. Make a point to send notes to those who you are grateful for, whether it’s teachers, family members, friends, co-workers, church members, etc. It can be for something specific or just generally how much you appreciate them. Handwritten is always best, but a text or voicemail is appreciated too.
👨👩👧👦 Get the family involved.
Make gratitude a family thing by making it part of your routine. Go around the table at meal time and have everyone say what they are most thankful for that day. Or talk through what you are grateful for at bedtime. Include them in sending notes too!
🔍 Find the good in all things.
Even on days where it seems like nothing is going well, there are things to be thankful for. Look for the silver lining. Most problems we face have a blessing in them somewhere. Overwhelmed with laundry? Be grateful for clothes on your family’s back. Feeling stressed and over-worked at your job? Be grateful for being able to provide for your family.
God is the source of all good things. Let us remember that when we are struggling to find the good or something to be grateful for. His saving grace alone is sufficient for us to have joy and be thankful each day!
“I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.” - Psalm 16:2
